Knife Found Near School in Middleton, Police Investigating

Police have launched an investigation after a knife was discovered close to St Annes CE Academy on Hollin Lane in Middleton.

The weapon was found by a member of the public earlier today (22/01/2026) near the school premises on Hollin Lane. the member of the public stated that they were told by the operator "we are unsure when officers would be able to attend". 2-hours later police arrived to secure the knife and to remove any potential risk to the public and students.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the school was informed and provided with safeguarding advice to support students and staff. There were no reported injuries, and the incident is not believed to be linked to any immediate threat at the school.
In a statement, GMP said:
"Officers have recovered the knife and are working on safeguarding children while investigating how it came to be there. GMP has no tolerance for the possession or use of knives in a public place.”
Reassurance patrols may be carried out in the area as inquiries continue. Officers are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen suspicious activity nearby or who may know how the knife ended up at the location.
