In a heartfelt show of community spirit, firefighters from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) spent time at Lodge Mill in Middleton this week, helping with the ongoing clean-up following recent damage.

The crew, more accustomed to emergency callouts, rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in shifting bricks, clearing rubble, and helping make the area safer for those continuing the recovery work. Standing together outside the historic mill, their presence brought not just practical support, but a real sense of encouragement to the local community.
Lodge Mill, a familiar and much-loved part of Middleton’s landscape, has long been a symbol of the town’s industrial past. Seeing it in a damaged state has been difficult for residents, but the arrival of the firefighters offered a moment of positivity during a challenging time.

Witnesses described the effort as “inspiring,” with the team working side by side, lifting debris and tackling the physical task with determination and good spirits. Their willingness to step in and help has not gone unnoticed.
One local resident said, “It’s incredible to see them here doing this. It shows they really care about the community, not just when there’s an emergency.”
Throughout the day, the firefighters helped clear unstable materials and move large amounts of brickwork, helping to prepare the site for the next stages of restoration. Their contribution has made a meaningful difference in getting things moving again.

It’s moments like these that highlight the deeper connection between emergency services and the people they serve. Beyond the sirens and response vehicles, there’s a commitment to standing alongside the community, especially when it matters most.
As work continues at Lodge Mill, the efforts of those firefighters will be remembered as a powerful example of what it means to come together and rebuild.
