A fire in Middleton on Hazelhurst Drive has damaged "several" properties. The blaze began at a house around 1 a.m. on May 23, 2025, and spread through the garden, eventually reaching a garden shed. This led to an "explosion" caused by a gas cylinder.

This led to the fire erupting and spreading quickly through neighbouring properties and gardens. The explosion caused windows to crack, prompting onlookers to flee for safety from the nearby block of flats on Hopwood Road.
Police were present, and roads were closed to ensure public safety because of the fire's severity and the potential presence of additional gas cylinders, which could lead to further explosions. a team from the Bolton fire responded to assist in containing the fire, which was advancing toward the block of flats and increasing the risks of further damage.

"A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At 1.05am on Friday (May 23) four fire engines from Rochdale, Hollins, Bury and Whitefield fire stations were called to a fire involving a large summer house on Hazelhurst Drive, Middleton.
“The fire caused some damage to surrounding properties with firefighters wearing breathing apparatus using hose reels and jets to extinguish the fire. Crews remained in attendance for around five and a half hours"

There were no reported injuries, and everyone managed to reach safety before the fire engulfed the properties. Fire crews, crime scene investigators, and a police dog are currently on the scene conducting additional checks and investigations to determine the fire's actual cause.
