Volunteers from the Middleton community demonstrate their ongoing commitment by diligently tending to the gardens and completing various tasks at Hopwood Hall Estate every week.

Their dedication highlights the significance of this historical site and underscores their efforts to safeguard and revitalize the structure for upcoming generations and events.

Following the commencement of efforts to restore the gardens that had fallen into disrepair after Rochdale Council neglected them, there has been a notable increase in the presence of diverse wildlife, including birds, frogs, bees, and more.

Volunteers have introduced a wide array of plant species, some sourced from their own gardens, to rejuvenate this historic hall and attract life back into the surroundings. The struggle for autonomous entry to the Hall continues in order to bypass having to enter the premises through Hopwood Hall College (Middleton Campus), as well as unresolved boundary concerns.

No further updates have been received regarding the resolution of these matters, but it is anticipated that a solution will be discovered to provide the community and volunteers with improved access for open days, allowing them to be on site every day of the week, including weekends.

The volunteers' dedication and hard work each week should be acknowledged and valued more, as they selflessly give up their own free time to be at the hall and contribute to its revival.

Jimmy, a volunteer, shared with us the efforts of the volunteer team in uprooting hundreds of trees and stumps, clearing brambles and tall grass, and restoring pathways that had been obscured by years of dirt and weeds. Nowadays, the volunteers dedicate their days to maintaining the gardens by mowing the grass and keeping the flower beds free of weeds.

There is a continuous list of tasks to be done, yet the dedicated team of volunteers approaches each week with enthusiasm, wearing smiles as they carry out the essential work of preserving this historical site without any fuss. It is truly remarkable.
